Loyd Grossman new ‘For One’ Range of Pasta Sauces

Loyd Grossman New For One Range of Pasta Sauces - this years mustn't have product range

I’m going to stick my neck out here and predict that this product will fail, quickly and spectacularly. Expect it to be discounted in a major retailer near you sometime soon.

Research will say that it is very sensible buying a single serve pack. There’s less waste and it is fabulous quality i’m sure.

But research isn’t real life. In real life, we like a bit of extra sauce to find something to do with and most importantly, research doesn’t show up that buying this will show you have no friends.

Like the Strand Cigarettes ads from the late 50’s (which I really can’t find a decent reference to) where they used the classic line ‘you’re never alone with a Strand’ showing a man in a dark coat on a windswept bridge under a single street light. The public saw this as a loner considering suicide, so the product failed and failed spectacularly.

I believe for all the same reasons, Loyd Grossman’s sauces for one will go exactly the same way – however nice they taste – as who wants to imply to a shop keeper that tehy are sad and have no friends?

  1. Hmm, I bought one of these the other day….and I like to think I have a few friends…….. so I now feel compelled to defend these slightly.
I think that there are people who shop just for themselves for all sorts of reasons – students, older people who live alone, single parents who eat later than their young kids, and in my case housewives whose husbands are pre-disposed to eating meat, meat and more meat, which I do’t always want to do.
In this new age of thrift, I think this could be a good move – it irritates me immensely that I have a fridge full of half-used jars that eventually get chucked away, hence why I bought one of these the other night.
I may have my hang-ups, but I like to think I’m not quite so insecure as to worry too much about what the Asda checkout girl thinks of me – and I hope I’m not the only one (no offence to Asda check-out girls), otherwise it is a sad state of affairs.
It never occurred to me in the slightest that there may be a stigma attached to the buying of meals for one, but after your comments, I will be very interested to see what happens to Lloyd and his sauce.

  2. Waitrose sell eggs in 4’s I think this is brilliant – we only ever need 4 eggs, not 6

I think alternatives to the norm can work really well – it’s just LG’s face on the packages that puts me off

  3. I read your blog about the eggs recently and whilst I agree with the thinking, I have to say it is incredibly wasteful in terms of the amount of packaging per product.

The cost of getting a product of this sort to shelf to home is all in the distribution and packaging. It would be far more cost effective to deliver decently resealable packs with enough for a few uses. It’s easy technology, but it isn’t anywhere near as profitable, so the supermarkets don’t exactly encourage it.

    1. Which sort of defeats the object of a quick healthy meal. I’m surprised they are still available to tell you the truth, as I thought they would have already disappeared by now.
